Mindbending New Arcade Game Psych Is Like Frogger On Acid
This insane indie dodge ’em up will blow your mind.
Upon first glance indie developer JCStranger’s minamilistic new arcade game Psych may not look like much, but those that opt to give it a try will find that within the first few minutes of gameplay it becomes readily apparent that that’s the whole point. Like an interactive version of one of those magic eye posters Psych takes a relatively mundane concept and turns it into a bizarre Alice In Wonderland style fever dream where you’re never really quite sure what to expect next.
It’s a simple idea really; All players must do is escape an ever expanding black hole by jumping between a revolving merry-go-round of platforms that move around the circle at the center of the screen in a mesmerizingly hypnotic fashion. But unlike a lot of other such minimalistic arcade games Psych takes a topsy turvy turn by employing a cavalcade of optical illusions designed to throw players off which gives it an at times frustrating but always patently unique experience.
This stylish approach serves both aesthetic and practical purposes by helping to draw a clear differentiation between Psych and much of its minimalistic arcade brethren. One minute players will be in the groove thinking they’re on top of the world and the next they’ll be cursing the screen when a giant magnifying glass suddenly shifts the perspective so they get flattened by a brick wall. Such is the fickle nature of Psych, a fiendishly challenging game that makes Flappy Bird seem like a walk in the park by comparison.
If you’re in the mood for an addicting new twitch style arcade game, Psych is just the ticket. You can pick it up now for free on Google Play.
