Retro Action RPG Crystal Picnic Unleashed Resurrects A Classic

It’s been a while since we last looked at indie developer Nooskewl Software’s ambitious pixel art action rpg Crystal Picnic when it first launched on the OUYA and eventually Google Play proper but this originally paid retro gem is back in action with the release of a new ad-supported edition of the game called Crystal Picnic Unleashed. Crystal Picnic is a particularly well crafted ode to 16-bit era rpgs about quip slinging animal buddies on a wacky adventure that will see them attempting to recover stolen magical crystals from an army of ‘roided out ants with gameplay divided between isometric exploration and real time sidescrolling battles. It has received a great deal of polish since I last played it and it now feels much more like the well rounded SNES style games it seeks to replicate thanks to a lot of little touches and tweaks over time. Releasing a full priced indie game on mobile can be a risky proposition so it’s good to see a great game like Crystal Picnic be able to reach a wider audience.

Crystal Picnic Unleashed is free to download on Android and iOS. The ad-free version can be gotten for $1.99 on Android, iOS, and PC.

Did they fix the battle system, because it was really awkward and bad.
