New Retro Roguelike The Layered Forest Takes Root On Android
A great new retro themed roguelike about dungeon crawling through a labyrinthine maze of malevolent vegetation dubbed The Layered Forest has made its way onto Android devices. Released by indie developer Jan Vijfhuizen, The Layered Forest casts players as a courageous young sorcerer investigating a mysterious magical forest that has been spreading across the land at an alarming rate and bringing a host of malicious monsters along with it. In their quest to reach the center of these nightmarish woods players will do battle with a wide array of enemy types in turn based tile combat like bone worshiping orcs and giant grim reapers as they progress from room to room in search of the doorway leading to the next floor.
At the start of each randomly generated run players only have access to a limited selection of spells but as they defeat monsters and level up they’ll acquire powerful new attacks to aid them against the increasingly more deadly enemies they’ll face. In addition to minding their health bar players will also need to ensure their character is well fed and rested by collecting food and sleeping when the coast is clear otherwise they’ll be seriously handicapping themselves when going up against some of the larger boss enemies. With its polished roguelike mechanics, fleshed out world design, and nice pixel art graphics The Layered Forest is a well-crafted and replayable portrait rpg that fans of the genre will get a kick out of.
The Layered Forest is free to download on Google Play.
