Twin Stick Shoot ‘Em Up Vertex Blaster Lands On OUYA

I think i’m in love. A new twin stick shoot ’em up by the name of Vertex Blaster has arrived on the OUYA marketplace, and it has quickly become my most played OUYA game. Created by indie developer Warner Skoch, Vertex Blaster is an incredibly addicting retro style shoot ’em up in the tradition of Geometry Wars and Super Stardust that not only has terrifically designed gameplay but also injects some fresh new ideas into the aging shoot ’em up genre to create an awesome melding of both old and new.

While a lot of twin stick shooters tend to stick with a solitary type of gameplay, Vertex Blaster mixes things up with four different modes that each offer an interesting new way to play the game. The arcade and survival modes are straightforward enough and should be familiar to most people but where Vertex Blaster really gets creative is with its signature “Meteor Shower” mode that has players defending lunar outposts threatened by errant mines. The gameplay here is sublime as players rush to manically shoot down looming meteors while simultaneously making critical repairs to any remaining installations. The fourth mode, “Scavenger” puts a survival horror spin on the proceedings as players will have to meter out their ammo if they are to have any hope of surviving against the encroaching alien hordes.

Vertex Blaster is a gorgeous game that represents the best of the shoot ’em up genre. It’s available now for $1.99 on the OUYA marketplace.
